WELCOME
TO LA ROSIÈRE LOG CABINS
La Rosière is a pretty detached house which is one
of only four houses in a hamlet which was originally established
as a result of the railway station, (now a seasonal residential
meeting place for a group of French people) .The
old route of the railway provides an excellent routeway for
cycling and walking. The hamlet lies about a mile away from
the village of Autry where there is a café and camp
site. In the opposite direction is the village of Bouconville.
A little
way from our house are the 2 self-catering log cabins we have
available to let; these have been built in our orchard. The
over-riding ambience of the area is one of peace and tranquillity.
The nearest patisserie, boulangerie, post office and bars
are approximately 3 miles away in a village called Challerange.
This village also boasts a station that, in summer, runs a
small tourist train every Sunday.
The houses
are surrounded by fields and woods which provide numerous
opportunities to see wildlife; some of the more exotic include
wild boar, (quite safe we are assured by the locals), buzzards,
(several varieties), pole cats, deer and storks to mention
but a few .
Sunday mornings can suddenly see the population of the little
hamlet increase ten fold, as the hunters meet at the old station
masters house to plan their own invasion of the countryside,
but with very different intentions to those of the tourist.
The scenery,
especially of the Argonne area, is soft and varied .
A mixture of old deciduous forest and a mixed farming economy.
The villages in the area are pretty
and for most of the year many are a riot of floral colours.
It is a region which lends itself perfectly to walking, cycling,
car and motorbike tours.
For those
interested in WW1, one week of exploration will be sadly inadequate.
The hamlet lay just behind the Hindenberg line, providing
us with a legacy of numerous bunkers and blockhouses in the
woods around us. La Rosiere, proudly proclaims 2 bunkers and
somewhat more tragically, the grave of a WW1 German reservist
Within 30 miles there are a huge number of cemeteries and
memorials to those who were killed in this most bloodiest
of wars.
